How We Chose the Perfect Trailer for Our Mobile Bookstore

As a lifelong reader and book lover, I’ve dreamed of owning a bookstore my entire life. The past couple of years the desire has been overwhelming strong. Last year I finally began putting pen to paper to figure out exactly what I would need to do in order to make my dream reality. While a brick-and-mortar store would be fun, it isn’t in the cards right now. But a mobile bookstore would be perfect since I can make it happen part time around my nine-to-five. The very first thing on my list was to find the right vessel for my endeavor. Today I’m sharing the story of how we chose the perfect trailer for our mobile bookstore.

Where to Shop for Trailers for a Mobile Bookstore

My husband isn’t new to cargo trailers. He has bought a few over the years and even converted one into a very nice camper. I was fortunate enough to have him help me shop for a trailer. We began looking at both new and used trailers on Facebook Marketplace, auctions, and dealers. Many dealers that sell campers also sell cargo trailers. There are also dealers that specialize in trailers only.

In the end, the cost difference between new and used wasn’t great, so I decided to spend the extra money on a new trailer so that I could get the included warranties and have a blank slate. This is a personal choice and there’s no wrong answer.

What We Looked for in a Trailer for Our Mobile Bookstore

When choosing a trailer for our mobile bookstore, we focused on size, weight, condition, and layout. We needed a trailer large enough to hold bookshelves and displays, but light enough to tow safely with my Jeep Gladiator. Since we purchased a brand new trailer we were able to start with a clean slate—no repairs, no surprises, and ready to customize exactly how we envisioned it.

When it comes to trailers, there are endless options. Some have a rear ramp door, others have double doors that swing open. Some have windows in various places that will need to be taken into consideration when installing bookshelves. Some have a window that opens up from the top and creates its own awning. There are endless possibilities.

Unfortunately, the only option that is somewhat limited with cargo trailers is color. They mostly come in black, white and red but occasionally I also see pink, purple, blue, and gray. Every great now and then I see other colors. Most business owners overcome this buy wrapping their trailers, but this can cost several thousand dollars. If you don’t have the money for a wrap or paint job immediately, I recommend looking for a color that will work with your branding and aesthetic.

One of the most important factors to us was height. My husband and I are both tall and we wanted our mobile bookstore to accommodate us and other reasonably tall folks. The standard height of a cargo trailer is six feet heigh. I specifically shopped for one that has an extra six inches of height. If you go with the standard height, you will be more limited on which shelves you can use and you will be asking many of your customers to be uncomfortable or forgo your store entirely.

The Trailer We Chose (And Why)

I decided on a 6′ x 12′ Interstate LoadRunner enclosed cargo trailer. Mine has rear double doors that swing out and it is rounded in the front and on the top. The height of the trailer is 6’6″ and it has a side door but no windows. It’s a very attractive medium gray color, and the pictures don’t do it justice. The finish is metallic and it sparkles in the sun. I couldn’t be more delighted with it, and I have no regrets. Here is the exact trailer we purchased.

Next Steps for the Mobile Bookstore

We’ve already made so much progress on the new store, and I can’t wait to share all of the details with you. It’s looking so cute! I’ll update you soon.

Until next time,
Happy reading & happy wandering —
